File-sharing utopiaWith its much ballyhooed Neo Network, Morpheus continues to woo users in hopes of P2P domination. The Neo Network uses something called "distributed hash tables" to make searches, and ultimately downloads, more efficient and reliable.
However, Morpheus isn't ready to abandon the rest of the P2P world and still connects to the Gnutella, Fast Track (Kazaa), eDonkey, and BitTorrent networks. In our tests, searches were extremely fast, with plenty of results appearing almost immediately. The program interface looks slick but it is cluttered with advertising contents (the ad-supported version also generated several pop-up windows, promoting the client, in our tests). Multiple searches now spawn a drawer to the application's left that features a handy progress bar. We like the network status indicator, which shows which networks you're connected to and if you're firewalled.
Morpheus's familiar amenities, such as the built-in media player and the live chat component, haven't changed much. We highly recommend Morpheus to file-sharing aficionados.

There's a familiar tree of features on the left, including links to torrent-aggregating Web sites and several promotional offers. The top of the app has big buttons with familiar icons, the center window shows the files being downloaded, and the bottom pane has tracker and peer info. The pane on the right rounds out the layout, with a torrent search feature and advertising. Among the usual features, BitComet offers chat capabilities, the ability to bookmark your favorite sites, a toolbar for Internet Explorer 7, and a context menu for Firefox 2.
While the app held its own against better-known competitors in terms of speed and handling multiple torrents, we found the ubiquitous advertisements to be annoying compared to the competition's ad-free environs. Overall, we think BitComet is worth trying and could become a major torrent app in the future.

A downloadable service full of optionsWith the a la carte online music store space becoming more crowded by the day, one-time bad boy Napster re-emerges as a label-endorsed gem. With a massive collection of tracks and some neat community features, this isn't the Napster you remember.
The interface is clean, with large, easy-to-read buttons and tabs for searching different areas of the service. Browsing is extremely quick, with results showing up just moments after you initiate them. We liked the Charts feature, which lets you search Billboard charts all the way back to 1956, in addition to Napster's own charts. The jukebox works well, but seems limited in comparison to programs such as iTunes or MusicMatch, which have more mature features. Although Napster has several positives in its corner, there are more than a few quirks. For starters, Napster forces you to create a user ID and login just to browse music. There also is no support for the industry-leading iPod. Finally, we experienced random odd behavior from the application.
